U14 Girls Surrey Cup Match Report – Dorking vs Cobham/ Chobham

Result: Dorking 35 v Cob/Chobham 20

On a rainy Sunday best described as good for ducks and bog snorkelling the U14s Girls played their  first Surrey Cup match away at Cobham. After weeks of training and several cancellations caused by frozen ground it was brilliant to be putting all the theory into practice. However our appointed pitch was waterlogged, and so was the one next to it. Luckily an available Lacrosse pitch looked in better condition; and after a quick consultation with the referee, and some well placed cones we were “game on.”

Our coaches player of the match, Matilda stepped brilliantly into the no.9 position after some logistics challenges about a Cobham/Chobham postcode error with the authors daughter (funny a few hours later).  Matilda calmly and confidently kept our structure and within the first few minutes Dorking were two tries up. Pod work and tenacity of rucking gave us the platform to unleash great running lines from the backs. Cob/Chobham to their credit rallied and soon we were in a tussle for control of the game.

With driving horizontal rain the chances for handling errors were legion, but both forwards and backs kept the passing short and accurate. We were as slick off the ball, with great communication and team work keeping go-forward through excellent supporting play. By the second half Cobham had run in 2 tries of their own through elusive footwork by their fly half.

You are rarely prouder as a coach than when you see your team rally and pull together under pressure; and even through the rain our team spirit was evident. Dorking clicked up a gear and with amazing attacking runs from all positions on the pitch and wonderful supportive rucking we fixed the final score line as 7 tries to 4. No conversions as Lacrosse goals don’t have posts ;-).

Tries scored – Taylor, Isla, Scarlettx2, Immi, Evie & Molly – Team  spirit & collective effort made the win !

Onwards to Barnes at home next weekend.
